Mobile applications follow the users – this is not news. If you have an Apple device and you appreciate your privacy, you can prevent them from doing this. But do you know that iOS has a whole bunch of special Apple services that do the same?

You can find them here: Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services .

An impressive list, is not it? By the way, unlike applications, these services work constantly. You might want to disable some of them, because you value privacy or because the battery life is important to you. Well, or right away for both reasons.

The good news is to set it all up quite easily. The bad news is that in the settings of the iPhone and iPad, very little is said about what the service is responsible for, so it’s simply not clear which of them can be turned off and which ones are not worth it. In this post, we will just tell you what each geolocation service does and what will happen if it is disabled.

So, let’s start

Service Geolocation iAd keeps a diary of your movements for promotional purposes. Application developers can use this data to show users that they are more likely to advertise. If you do not want such an imposed duty, turn off this service.

Geo-warnings are recorded when you enter a particular place or go away from there and show you the appropriate alerts. Something like “call my wife when I walk past the market,” or “remind about today’s meeting when I come to the office.” If you do not use this service, safely disable it.

Calibration of the compass . The electronic compass allows you to see the direction of your movement on the map (in fact, what you are looking at). It’s very convenient. The calibration service uses geolocation data to improve the accuracy of the compass, so we do not recommend turning it off.

The Calibration of Motion Accounting service allows you to configure the motion sensor function that is used by different fitness applications. Do not have such applications? Disable this service.

Find iPhone / iPad – if your device is lost, you can find it using iCloud. Therefore, it is better not to disable this service.

However, do not forget that with the help of the same iCloud anyone can detect, erase or block your iOS device – if, of course, you can log into your account. Therefore, always use strong passwords for your Apple ID / iCloud and activate two-factor authentication.

Share a geographic position: if you do not often send friends and family members information about your movements with an Apple branded application, turn off this service. Please note that disabling this service does not block the ability to share location for all of your applications, so you can send this notification to your friends in Hangouts or somewhere else.

Cellular network search – this service collects data about cell towers located near your device and determines the signal reception level to track how you use the device’s modem, how much the towers are loaded, and so on. You do not call this function necessary, so you can turn it off completely.

Safari and Spotlight offers : this service sends information about your location to Apple every time you enter a search query. This data is needed to provide the user with accurate information based on his current location. If you rarely use Spotlight, you can easily disable this service.

Wi-Fi networks : this service works the same as “Search for a cellular network,” only collects and sends to Apple data about Wi-Fi networks that your device sees. On the one hand, it allows the manufacturer to improve the work of the geolocation service. On the other hand, with its help, Apple can monitor you even when you turn off the GPS. Leave or disable – the choice is yours.

Setting the time zone : The clock and calendar on your device use this service. If you often travel abroad or in different regions of Russia, better leave it active. If you rarely leave your hometown, you can select the time zone manually and turn off this option.

HomeKit – this service is needed only for those people who have smart home devices compatible with Apple HomeKit. If you do not have one, disable this option without any doubts.

Frequently visited places : your device records where you often go (to work, to visit, to a supermarket near the house, to your favorite shopping center) to show you different warnings: alerts about traffic jams, weather and the like. This information is stored locally on your device. If you use these alerts, leave this service active.

Diagnosis and use: Apple anonymously collects information about you and how you use your gadgets. If you are not ready to become part of the endless process of improving Apple devices, you can safely disable this option.
